Dog breeding is - or should be - a big responsibility. Good breeders are caring and knowledgeable about their breed and they invest significant time, thought and research into planning their breedings. In order to reduce the chance of producing offspring with inherited disorders, good breeders conduct appropriate screening tests on the dogs they breed. Breeding for health is a priority for responsible breeders. Knowing the health status of your dog is a resource to be used to make good breeding decisions. I use a DNA testing scheme for simple inherited diseases - e.g. eye diseases, degenerative myelopathy. Clinical screening programmes for complex inherited diseases - e.g hemivertebrae, hip dysplasia |
